One day, Proserpina, the beautiful daughter of Jupiter and the goddess of the Earth, while picking flowers in a Sicilian meadow was kidnapped by Pluto, god of the underworld, who wanted to make her his wife.
Desperate for her mother Demeter, she ran to ask Jupiter for help who, however, encouraged the union of her daughter who would become her queen.
Then her mother decided not to take care of the Earth anymore. At that point Jupiter, worried about the death of the creatures, convinced Pluto to let Proserpina return for at least six months every year.
So it was and legend has it that when the queen returns to earth, poppies bloom with their red color, reminding the goddess of the passion of the groom who awaits her in the underworld.
Thank you!
